* Robbinsville’s homecoming court consisted of 11 senior girls, and mascots from first, second and third grades. The school wanted to allow more seniors to participate, which spared parents of underclassmen the expense of another formal.

* U.S. Air Force SSgt. Justin Cochran was decorated with the Army Commendation Medal. It was awarded to individuals who – while serving in the Army – had distinguished themselves by acts of heroism, meritorious achievements or service. Cochran was an engineering assistant, assigned to the 36th Civil Engineering Squadron in Guam, and the son of Karen Brintmall of Bryson City and Jeff Cochran of Robbinsville.

* A search among Graham County’s highest mountain peaks did not turn up a single clue to the location of a missing Charlotte man. David C. Guest, 45, was reported missing on Sept. 14. The Graham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a vehicle found near the Cherohala Skyway did belong to Guest.

* Dr. Don Carringer and Andrews District Memorial Hospital planned to open Cheoah Family Medicine in the former office of Dr. Stephens on Court Street. Along with Carringer was set to be Sonia Vishneski, RNC, MSN, women’s health nurse practitioner. In addition to office hours, the two planned to also serve the Graham County Health Department.

* Robbinsville held firm during the homecoming showdown, defeating Andrews 20-8. Coaches Bob Colvin and Judy Nichols were honored during halftime, in front of a standing-room-only crowd. Nikki Jenkins was also crowned Homecoming Queen.

* Donald Gregory was appointed City/County Manager. Roy Jones, chairman of the board of commissioners, announced that Gregory began his duties on Oct. 1. Gregory succeeded Graham Denton.

* The Black Knights fell to 3-2 on the season, as a strong Sylva-Webster Golden Eagles team delivered a 39-0 defeat. Update: Robbinsville only lost one more time from that point on and went on to clinch the program’s third state championship.
