* The Town of Fontana Dam approved their budget of $171,719.88 for the upcoming fiscal year. The next largest sum of revenue was from ad-valorem taxes – $6,898.36. Town Administrator Jessie Cooper wasn’t sure how long the town could continue to use these fees, as this practice could cause financial trouble.

* Marvin David Hedrick – also known as “Jim Tom,” from the television series Moonshiners – was arrested for driving while impaired. His scooter ran out of gas just as Deputy Cody George had been following and stopped to assist him. Smelling alcohol, “Jim Tom” was arrested and booked. “He was as nice as could be,” George said.

* Robbinsville Shooting Team coach Jeff Knight, surprised his seniors with hand-painted plaques that included an action photo of themselves. The plaques were made by Robbinsville Elementary School Art teacher Lynn Lynn. Seniors were Forrest Cable, Preston Cole, Greg Burchfied and Gabe Smith.

* Sheriff Melvin Howell faced another charge of assault on a female, in addition to a charge of communicating threats. A third assault charge was also filed by an employee. Although the first two charges were retracted, the district attorney did not see fit to do so.

* Graham County was gearing up for the annual Heritage Festival and the 4th of July celebration. Events began with music, a barbecue, fireworks and a street dance under the Big Oaks at the former Robbinsville High School. The 4th of July began by honoring veterans, followed by a parade.

* Milltown Grocery transitioned to Mason’s General Store, under the management of Rob and Robin Mason, who were relatively newcomers to Graham County. “I’m working very hard and meeting a lot of great people,” said Rob. Meanwhile, Robin showed her appreciation by holding customer appreciation days for her faithful customers.
