* According to Graham County Sheriff Steve Odom, the new county policy forbidding parking patrol cars at any officer’s residence would be jeopardizing the safety of officers and residents. Odom told the Star that upon interviewing every officer, none had abused the policy – but the new stipulation would definitely hinder the officer’s performance.

* Jamie Silvers and Anthony Brown took charge in the final period, as the Robbinsville Black Knights recorded a 80-76 win over Hiwassee Dam. Brown’s 10 points in the fourth quarter led the Knights’ as they outscored the Eagles 29-22 in the period. Silvers and Brown were the scoring leaders, with 22 and 21 points respectively.

* With only 4-12 inches of snow in parts of Graham County, it appeared that the county escaped the brunt of the Blizzard of 1996. Black ice and slick roads covered some streets, as one driver told the Star that he had to jump from his truck after encountering black ice. Emergency services responded to between 100-200 regarding road conditions.

* The Lady Knights fell to Hiwassee Dam, 47-35, giving the Knights a 1-2 record for the season. Even Pam Beasley’s 12 points in the fourth quarter was not enough to lift Robbinsville.

* A large 150-gallon copper still was located in the basement of the home of Mrs. O’Neal Allen by sheriff Melvin Howell. Deputies Noah Shuler and Sam Shope, along with ABC officers from Asheville. The still pictured on the front page was in full operation and had been under surveillance for a week.

* The Robbinsville boys beat Mountain View, 55-46, after being paced by Andy Jordan’s 15 points. Calvin Keys had 12 points and Scott Perkins scored 10 points. Also adding to the win were Dee Walsh with seven points, Charlie Mauck with six points, Eddie Phillips with four points and David Cook with one point.
