Feb. 8, 2007

* February came in with a snowstorm, closing schools and causing traffic problems. Snow and ice covered most of the area, leaving some areas with six inches – especially on the Cherohala Skyway. Tractor trailers were stalled in the snow, prompting the N.C. Department of Transportation to close the Stecoah side of Sweetwater Road until snowplows could make it through.

* The Robbinsville Wrestling Black Knights won a tournament at Murphy with 194 points. Nine-of-14 wrestlers made it to the final round. Of those, seven won their bracket: Erik Messick, Weston Haney, Brad Caldwell, Chris Griggs, Jake Phillips, Cody Carpenter and Chandler Turpin.

Feb. 8, 2001

* Thomas Orr pled guilty to the sale and delivery of a controlled substance. Graham County Sheriff Steve Odom confirmed that Orr sold methamphetamine to an informant at the suspect’s residence. After receiving a sentence of 12-15 months in prison, the sentence was suspended to 36 months of supervised probation and Orr was fined $570.

* Robbinsville’s middle school girls basketball team won the Smoky Mountain Conference Tournament for the first time in the program’s history, defeating Hayesville in the finals 42-38. Robbinsville’s victory capped a 15-2 regular season.

Feb. 8, 1996

* Extreme weather was the reason that students had completed only one week of school since 1996 had begun. Graham County Schools had used 11 snow days, compared to six in 1995. At this point, the school year was set to end on June 10 and having Spring Break was questionable.

* David Jordan’s sentence came after being convicted by a Graham County jury on 21 counts of child molestation. The victims were two family members – of which one was still pending trial, as a separate charge. Jordan received four prison sentences; one for 10 years, one for four years, one at 4 ½ years and the final sentence was 10 years, with four years probation.
