* Steve Hooper’s seat on the Town of Robbinsville Board of Aldermen was vacated, as Hooper had moved out of the Robbinsville city limits the prior year. An appointment was expected to be considered at the next meeting. Update: Hooper later not only returned to the town, but served as mayor from 2013-21. Meanwhile, a vacancy on the town’s current board has been left unfulfilled since January of last year.

* Robbinsville hosted the Far West Invitational, which included 10 of the toughest teams in North Carolina. As a team, the Black Knights finished in fifth place. The Most Outstanding Wrestler Award was Daniel Findley; he had received the distinction all four years of his varsity career. Update: Today, the event is known as the James Orr Invitational.

* Tapoco Lodge was being considered as an alcohol- and substance-abuse rehabilitation center. A letter of intent to lease the facility was received from a man in Lewisville, Tenn., according to Craig Smith with the Department of Human Resources. The property was then owned by Alcoa.

* In a light-hearted photo on the front page, the caption “King of the Long Creek dumpsters” accompanied an image of a rooster sitting atop a container.

* The Robbinsville Black Knights shocked a strong Cherokee team by picking up an 83-76 win. It appeared to be a blowout for Cherokee early in the game, but the Knights regained their composure and according to coach Scott Perkins, “They won it at the end of the second quarter.”

* Graham County seventh-grade students studying communications and media visited The Graham Star, as well as the Cherokee Scout in Murphy. The field trip gave the students an opportunity to observe first-hand the operation of the newspapers. The students were accompanied by Iris Gregory, James Cameron and Gary Steppe.

* The Black Knights beat Nantahala, 53-41, behind the scoring of Scott Perkins with 16 points and Dee Walsh with 14 points. In a second game, the Black Knights also took an early lead and coasted past Cherokee, 67-59. Perkins led with 14 points; Walsh had 13.
